Overview

Globetech was engaged by BlueScope Steel to design and manufacture the upgrade to the No. 3 Stand Converter Drive System.

Scope

Working closely with BSL, Globetech was responsible for the complete design and manufacture of the No. 3 Stand Converter Drive System upgrade. This included the development of the drive and control system, conducting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and final commissioning of the upgraded system.

Project Challenges

The primary challenge was defining functionality requirements across all potential operating scenarios, as historical data needed to develop the system was not documented. Installation challenges included managing in-ground services to prevent disturbance from excessive runoff.

How We Managed This

Functionality requirements were finalised through a series of client engagement workshops, which allowed historical data to be captured and incorporated into the system design. Installation challenges were addressed by installing in-ground services at an appropriate depth to prevent disruption. The manufacturing phase was expedited, enabling the system to be commissioned ahead of schedule.

Value Adding

Globetech implemented several innovative design solutions, resulting in project cost savings while providing enhanced functionality for operations, including integrated SCADA and HMI systems. The outcome was a high-availability plant delivered efficiently and safely.

Zero Harm

The project safety record was excellent with no LTI or MTI’s recorded.
