Overview

Globetech was engaged by the Department of Defence to design and manufacture a battery charging system and shore power supply to support the Collins Class submarines.

Scope

Globetech’s scope of supply included the design and manufacture of the power infrastructure required to support submarine battery charging operations. This comprised main transformers, AC power distribution, AC to DC converters, DC power distribution, wharf-side DC supply, and the overall control system.

Project Challenges

The project presented several challenges, primarily in defining the functional requirements across all potential operating scenarios. In addition, the complex project structure and multi- layered approval process made decision- making and coordination particularly challenging.

How We Managed This

The functionality requirements were developed and finalised through a series of client engagement workshops. Open communication and proactive management of outstanding actions were key to navigating the complex approval structure and maintaining project momentum.

Value Adding

Globetech leveraged its in-house design expertise to ensure the switchboards and associated systems were manufactured to meet all Defence specifications while maintaining a strong focus on safety in design and ease of maintenance.

Zero Harm

The project safety record was excellent with no LTI or MTI’s recorded.
